Norse Geometric Encoding
The alphabets that encode geometry. What's authentic, what's modern invention, and how to read the runes with s- awareness.
Modern culture is flooded with "Viking symbols" — from tattoos to jewelry to fantasy media. But most of what circulates has no connection to actual Viking Age practice. Before learning the runes, we must distinguish between what's archaeologically attested and what's modern invention.
Many popular "Norse symbols" are not from the Viking Age:
This doesn't make these symbols meaningless — but it does mean they're post-medieval Icelandic folk magic or modern creations, not Viking Age artifacts.
Elder Futhark (24 runes, 2nd-8th c.) and Younger Futhark (16 runes, 8th-11th c.) are thoroughly documented in hundreds of inscriptions.
Thor's hammer pendants are among the most common Viking Age artifacts. Real, widespread, archaeologically proven.
Three interlocking triangles appear on ~7 Viking Age objects (Gotland stones, Oseberg). "Valknut" is a modern name — we don't know what Vikings called it.
Described in Eddas, depicted on Gotland stones and bracteates. Both literary and archaeological evidence.
Ancient solar symbol appearing across Eurasia for millennia. Found on bracteates, Gotland stones, and many other Norse artifacts.
First documented in the Huld manuscript (1860). Not Viking Age. Popular today but historically from Icelandic folk magic period.
The runic alphabets are the authentic writing systems of the Norse world. Learning them connects you directly to the inscriptions — no intermediary translation needed. Below is an interactive guide to both the Elder Futhark (24 runes, used 2nd-8th century) and Younger Futhark (16 runes, used 8th-11th century).

Sound: f
Position: 1 (Freyr's Ætt)
Cattle, wealth, mobile property. The first rune represents material abundance and energy in motion.
Position 1 = the initiation point. Fehu begins the sequence — it's the first emission, the starting signal. Cattle move; wealth circulates. This is S⁺ at its purest: energy flowing outward into the world.
What rune makes the sound "f"?
Both Elder and Younger Futhark are divided into three ætt (families). This isn't arbitrary organization — it encodes the triaxial structure of the framework.
Three ætt of 8 runes each. 8 = 2³ = three doublings. Each ætt contains the full binary expansion.
Freyr's Ætt (1-8): The outward movement. S⁺ dominant. Wealth, power, journey, fire, gift, joy.
Hagal's Ætt (9-16): The transition zone. S=0. Disruption, necessity, ice, year, mystery, protection, sun.
Tyr's Ætt (17-24): The inward movement. S⁻ dominant. Justice, growth, horse, human, water, seed, day, heritage.
24 total = 4 × 6 = four transforms × six-unit structure. The Elder Futhark is a complete geometric system.
Note the asymmetry: the first ætt has 6 runes, the other two have 5 each. This mirrors the inequality of the four transforms — one dominant, three subordinate.
16 runes but each covers more sounds. The compression increases information density. This is why the Rök Stone uses cipher runes for the Younger Futhark — the ætt:position notation (like [3:3]) addresses runes as coordinates in a 2D grid.
16 = 4 × 4 = transforms squared. Or 2⁴ = four doublings. The Younger Futhark is the Elder compressed to pure binary structure.
Each rune position in the futhark corresponds to a phase position in the scalar field. This isn't mystical interpretation — it's reading the structure that the alphabet embodies.
When you identify a rune's ætt, you know its polarity. When you identify its position within the ætt, you know its phase. Together, these give you the rune's location in the geometric field.
This is why the Rök Stone's cipher notation matters: [ætt:position] is literally phase-space addressing. The carvers weren't hiding letters — they were demonstrating that every symbol, every sound, every meaning can be located by coordinates.
The runes aren't magic symbols in the fantasy sense. They're an alphabet whose structure encodes geometry. 24 runes = 4 × 6 = transforms × phases. Three ætt = three polarities. The sequence from ᚠ to ᛟ traces the complete scalar arc from S⁺ emission to S⁻ reception.
Learning the runes means learning to read the structure. Every inscription — from the Rök Stone to bracteate formulas to Gotland memorial texts — becomes accessible when you know the alphabet. No translation needed. Direct contact with the carved stone.
The "magic" of the runes is the magic of geometry made writable. The same κ that structures the cosmos structures the futhark. The letters don't invoke power — they embody it.
κ = 2π/180 = the rotation that letters trace
The stroke falls. The letter forms. The meaning transmits.
This is what alphabets remember.
